Holding, attuning, and human becoming, in relationship with the natural world..
Together in Nature
Together in Nature
Together in Nature is a retreat-style training for individuals who feel called to support others, and themselves - through change, challenge, and transition, in ways that are grounded, embodied, and deeply human.
It is for those who sense that healing and growth do not come from fixing or pushing through, but from being met, accompanied, and witnessed - with skill, presence, and care.
This work brings people together who are already holding a lot: in families, communities, educational spaces,
land-based work, peer support, and everyday life.
You do not need a formal role or qualification to belong here - lived experience is more than enough.
Nature as Co-Facilitator
At the heart of Together in Nature is relationship with the living world.
Nature is not a backdrop for this work, but an active co-facilitator. The land offers rhythm, pattern, and
constant sensory information that supports human nervous systems to settle, orient, and respond. Weather, landscape,
plants, and more-than-human life share the work of regulation and reflection.
As humans, we develop(ed) within this living system. Disconnection from it is not neutral - many nervous systems experience
it as loss. Re-connection expands the resources available to us, widening our capacity to feel, reflect, and stay present with what matters.
Outdoors, we are not doing this work alone.
What is Together in Nature?
Co-created by Emma Baxter and Jon Cree, Together in Nature weaves somatic awareness, sensory attunement,
story-making, and nature-based practice into an immersive learning journey.
The training is informed by a wide range of understandings about how humans:

learn through body, relationship, and environment

regulate and become dysregulated

form meaning through story, symbol, and pattern

develop trauma imprints and separate into fragmented and exiled personality parts

change through experience rather than instruction
How this work unfolds over time ...
Together in Nature follows a developmental arc that mirrors how humans naturally integrate experience:
Somatics & Sensory Worlds
- Learning to notice sensation, rhythm, and signal — in ourselves, in others, and in the land.
Story-Making & Archetypes
- Exploring how meaning forms through story, pattern, and character, and how archetypal capacities can be consciously accessed as skills rather than unconsciously enacted, or lost.
Coherence & Resonance
- Sensing how parts come into relationship — within the self, between people, and with the wider environment — allowing integration to happen without force.
Space-Holding
- The culmination of the work: the capacity to stay present through intensity, uncertainty, and transition, without taking over, controlling or collapsing.
Each stage builds on the last, and participants may enter at different points while being welcomed into a shared language and community of practice.
A Living Training Pathway
Together in Nature is designed as an ongoing learning community, not a one-off event (although one-off attendance
is often how it starts).
Workshops, retreats, and online gatherings are held across seasons and years, allowing learning to deepen through
repetition, reflection, and relationship. Participants who join at any stage are welcomed into a shared field of practice,
with access to written and recorded materials, and opportunities to continue learning together.
Alongside in-person gatherings, participants are invited to live online sessions through the year - offering skill-focused teaching, integration, and space for questions as practice meets real life.
This approach allows continuity without pressure and belonging without obligation.

What You’ll Gain
Participants often describe leaving with:

A grounded, embodied understanding of how nervous systems respond to stress, connection, and change

Practical skills for attunement, co-regulation, and presence — usable in everyday life

A richer approach to story-making that integrates body, environment, and relationship

Greater confidence in supporting others without taking responsibility for their process

An expanded sense of resourcing — including relationship with the more-than-human world
Participants also receive an outdoor somatic story-ing and facilitation kit, designed to support this work with families,
peers, groups, and communities. These adaptable tools help embed the practices beyond the training itself.
At the core of Together in Nature is space-holding.
Space-Holding: A Signature Pillar
Space-holding is the skill and art of recognising moments of transition, intensity, or uncertainty - and staying
present with them. These moments may be subtle or profound, everyday or life-changing.
In this work, space-holding means:

Being-with rather than fixing

Offering steadiness without control

Allowing experience to unfold at its own pace
Participants explore how to:

Hold themselves through strong sensation, emotion, or not-knowing

Hold others with respect and clear boundaries

Recognise and activate archetypal capacities that support presence and care

Integrate space-holding into family life, community spaces, and professional contexts
Being outdoors deepens this practice. The land itself becomes a holder, sharing the work of containment,
regulation, and orientation. Nature is not something we use — it is something we relate with, expanding our
capacity to hold and be held.
Trauma-Informed, Not Therapy
Together in Nature is deeply trauma-informed, supporting awareness of how overwhelm, fragmentation, and adaptation
show up in bodies, relationships, and stories.
It is not therapy. There is no diagnosing or treating. The focus is on skill, awareness, and confidence - so participants
can support themselves and others through challenge and change with greater safety and clarity.

What Have People Said?
Feedback from Together in Nature
It was a truly inspiring, deepening, connecting, attuning and hugely humbling experience. I don’t think I can even put into words just how magical and transformative it was.

Ali McClean
from This Spirit Sings
Incredibly healing, safe, inspiring & warming. I arrived a weary, haggard, battered traveller and left a warrior of peace.

Ethan M P
Forestry Practitioner
What chimed most for me was the session in the woods, moving with the trees and the synchronized walk with another. I came away as someone who feels more in tune with my nervous system and doesn’t have to feel ashamed for sitting listening.

Allannah F
Media Creator & GrowFree Community Peer
I felt gently guided to a very moving deep space – to get unstuck - held by both Jon and Emma and the community. It was deeply trust-building. The mirroring and creative toolkit were most useful and impactful for me.

At GrowFree we know that life experience is more than enough to qualify us for expertise. You don't need a qualification to join these embodied learning pathways. We would like to know what experience you are bringing with you though.
As a practitioner-oriented training, it is also for qualified and experienced practitioners who would like to enhance their knowledge and confidence in trauma-informed, nature-based practice (eg. space-holding, education, therapeutic care) and other support.
In-person workshops are held at GrowFree's developing community site near Kemnay, Aberdeenshire. Camping is available along with breakfast for a further contribution. Shared evening meals are organized. Prices listed are non-residential.
Workshops run 9.30am-4pm. The core content is delivered 10am-2.30pm to support parental participation. There may be earlier morning and evening sessions that deepen integration, embodied experience and connection as a community.
This Guided development experience will support you to work in a trauma-informed manner in a range of practitioner roles and peer facilitator roles. It will enhance your practice as a yoga teacher, holistic/somatic practitioner, support worker, teacher, outdoor (and other) educator, health professional, social worker, doctor, psychologist, parent, childcare worker and more - to be more trauma-informed and confident in nature. A learning aim of the course is for participants to be confident to design and lead their own spaces, practices and ceremonies in nature. You can request our certificate of completion for a further £15.
We will explore having this accredited as a training if there is enough interest and we find an accreditation body aligned with the GrowFree values.
Together in Nature is an experiential learning journey for anyone who holds — or wants to hold — trauma-sensitive space for themselves and others in nature. You don’t need a formal role or qualification; lived experience is enough. This could include practitioners, educators, community facilitators, parents, or anyone drawn to supporting growth, regulation, and connection in themselves and others.
Participants leave with a deeper understanding of how nervous systems inter-relate with each other and the natural world, and how to create spaces that empower, soothe, and guide. You’ll also receive a facilitation kit and manual to help you bring these practices into daily life, professional work, or community spaces.
If your body says “yes,” this work is for you.
If your organisation values trauma-sensitive, progressive, body-informed, ecologically aware ways of working — and wants to tap into the abundant resources available in nature — this is for you too.
